Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

What is CBT?

Essentially, how we view a particular situation

affects our thoughts, feelings, emotions,

and behaviours.

In 2019 “Just a Thought” was launched in Aotearoa. This initiative was focused upon CBT.

The document “Seeing Things Clearly” is a useful place to start.

Older NZ-based initiatives, such as “All Right?”, launched in Canterbury following the 2011 earthquakes, also have CBT-based resources which they call “Healthy Thinking”.

Their suggestion was to deal with thoughts in the following way:

  • Catch it

  • Check it

  • Change it.

They suggest “Try to use this every day, until healthy thinking becomes a new habit.”… why not try this for 10 minutes a day, for 10 days.

They provide links to a Canadian site that explains more about unhelpful thinking patterns, and suggested exercises to improve healthy thinking.
